Two stylists who took over a thriving salon in South Tyneside are hoping to cut it in the world of men’s haircuts.

Sybil Ridley and Rachael Steadman bought Cutz hair salon, in Boldon Lane, South Shields, in April following the retirement of the previous owner.

Since then they have seen their business grow and in November decided to venture into the world of men’s hair styling.

Upper Cutz Barbers has been decked out with retro Marvel comic strip posters and, as well as haircuts for both men and boys, they also offer beard trimming.

Emma Robinson who previously worked in a salon in Jarrow, will look after the running of the barber shop while stylists Tracey Tully, who has 30 years of experience as a hairdresser, will continue to work alongside Sybil and Rachael in the ladies’ salon.

Mrs Ridley started her hairdressing career at Cutz as a 15-year-old apprentice 26 years ago and says she is “excited” about the future.

She said: “With the previous owner retiring, I spoke to my friend Rachael and we decided it would be a great opportunity for us to take on the business.

“I have been working here since I was 15 years old and have done all my training here while Rachael has been here since 1999.

“Together we have more than 50 years’ experience of hairstyling and it was a natural step for both of us to take.”

The barber shop branch of the business was opened last month after the two women decided they wanted to make use of an empty room above the salon. Mrs Ridley added: “We are really excited about it all and hope it takes off.”

In January the team will welcome stylist Stacey Alder back from maternity leave, and she will work between the salon and the barber shop.

Appointments are not needed for Upper Cuts. However, it is advisable ladies book appointments for Cutz.

Ladies having their hair cut and styled in the salon between now and December 19, will receive a raffle ticket which will give them the chance to win a luxurious hair and body-care hamper.

Meanwhile, the barber shop is offering £2 off all men’s cuts until December 12.

Cutz is open Monday to Saturday and has late-night appointments on Fridays. Upper Cutz is open Friday and Saturday only.
