A BUSINESS in East Shields celebrated a £20,000 revamp by giving away 370 sandwiches.

Lesley Cuthbertson, the franchisee of Subway in Prince Edward Road, Harton Nook, held a grand opening to show off her shop’s new look.

As part of the event, Ms Cuthbertson, who has run her business for three years, gave away 370 sarnies.

It was hungry schoolchildren from nearby Harton Technology College in Lisle Road, who took advantage of the offer and packed out the shop during lunchtime.

She said: “The reopening went really well, by 4.30pm we had made 370 sandwiches. Our main customers were definitely pupils from the school, though. We had quite a rush on during the school’s lunchtime. We also had a member of staff dressed as a giant sandwich to encourage people to come in.”

As part of the facelift, the takeaway shop now has new floor tiles, plus tables and chairs.

This means customers will now be able to sit in and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.

Ms Cutherbertson said: “It looks so much better now, that we’ve given it a new look.

“The fact that people can come in and sit down to enjoy their sandwiches, or perhaps even just pop in for a drink and a rest will make a difference.”
