A South Tyneside teenager has appeared in court accused of raping a child.
Tristan McGowan, of Dock Street, South Shields, appeared before South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court charged with raping a boy aged under 13 and assaulting a boy aged under 13 by sexual touching.
The case is set for a crown court trial.
The 19-year-old was not asked to enter pleas during a brief hearing at the court yesterday.
He spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.
He was told that the charges are so serious they can only be dealt with at the crown court.
Maimuna Bappa, prosecuting, said: “The case falls to be sent to the crown court.”
Both matters were sent to Newcastle Crown Court for a hearing on Tuesday, May 17.
McGowan was granted unconditional bail until then.
