South Shields’ ‘Yella Welly’ is going upmarket after revamp

A well-known landmark venue has been given a jobs-boosting new look as it gets set to open its the doors to the public.

The main bar and entrance of the Hedworth Hall in Dean Road, South Shields, has undergone a major revamp.

We are all now looking forward to a new era for the Hedworth Hall.

Gone is the old bar, sports memorabilia on the walls, chairs and tables, to be replaced with what manager Carl Mowatt has described as a more “elegant” look.

The bar has also been given a new name, Monte Carlo Cocktail and Prosecco lounge, to match the new ambience of the venue.

Work on the main entrance and bar area began on January 4, leaving only its two function rooms open for parties and events.

The building, a former Masonic lodge, has also been a nightclub in the past called The Golden Slipper - known more locally as the ‘Yella Welly’.

It is was taken over by South Tyneside businessman Tony Singh, who has also brought big-name sporting legends to the area with his sportsman’s dinners.

The revamp has also led to eight new members of staff being taken on, including a Thai chef.

Singers will also be introduced on a regular basis within the new-look lounge.

Mr Mowatt said: “The entrance and main bar area has undergone a massive transformation and refurbishment.

“Along with the new look, we have introduced a new cocktail menu, new wines, champagne, prosecco and chilled beers.

“There will also be a new tapas menu.”

Mr Mowatt added: “There is a huge buzz about the place and everyone is looking forward to showcasing the new-look bar to the public.

“There has been a huge amount of interest in the revamp, with a lot of people commenting on how elegant the place is looking.

“The Hedworth Hall is a beautiful building and we would like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding while work was being undertaken.

“We are all now looking forward to a new era for the Hedworth Hall.”

The building has two function rooms, Otto Restaurant and holds a marriage licence.

Doors to the new-look Monte Carlo Cocktail and Prosecco Lounge will open on Saturday at noon.
