South Tyneside Council bosses in rubbish dumping clampdown

Coincil bosses in South Tyneside are warning people who mess up the borough that they are facing legal action.

South Tyneside Council is warning fly-tippers that it is continuing to use new powers to crack down on fly-tipping.

The new legislation, which came into force earlier this year, allows council officials to issue on-the-spot fines of between £150 and £400 to people caught low level fly-tipping.

Recently, a man was fined £150 after admitting illegally dumping waste at the side of Nile Street in West Holborn in South Shields.

The penalty has since been paid in full.

Coun Moira Smith, lead member for area management and community safety at South Tyneside Council, said: “There is simply no excuse for people to leave their rubbish at the side of the road.

“The council provides a range of affordable options for residents to have waste collected from their home in addition to the regular waste collections from all residential properties in the borough.”

She added: “We have a legal responsibility, but also a moral duty to our residents, to keep the borough clean and tidy.

“When people abandon waste, it not only blights the area, it can also pose a health risk to residents and cause harm to wildlife.

“Furthermore, the cost of disposing of this waste can be very high. That cost that has to be borne by council tax-payers.

“For all these reasons, we will to use our new powers against the tiny minority of people who illegally dump their waste and ensure they are punished for their thoughtless actions.”

Illegal rubbish dumpers cost cash-strapped council bosses more than £200,000 in 2013/14.
