In the North East, 12 councils will receive a share of more than £3million.

This, the Government says, will help repair about 58,000 potholes during this financial year. Over the next five years, the fund will give authorities £50million a year to help them tackle more than four million potholes.

A South Tyneside Council spokeswoman said: “We recognise that good road surfaces are essential to highways safety and are committed to maintaining safe standards across the borough.

“Recent figures show that we have lower levels of defective road surfaces than some of our neighbours. However ,we are not complacent and will continue to improve the network further.

“One of the ways we are working to do this is by resurfacing defective roads with a more robust, flexible material.

“We await confirmation from DfT on our funding allocation for this financial year, however this could be a welcome addition to the work we do to fill in potholes and repair damaged roads right across South Tyneside.

“This funding will help us to make sure our roads are maintained to safe standards as quickly and effectively as possible.

“We encourage people to report potholes an carry out regular road condition surveys.”
