A popular cricket tournament in South Tyneside is set to be revived.
Marsden Cricket Club is aiming to bring back the South Tyneside Cricket Sixes competition in a bid to further boost the profile of the sport.
“I’ve done other tournaments in the past but this is the one which really sticks in the minds of players as one of the most successful which is why I’m hoping to bring it back.”Chris Mann
The event, which takes place on Sunday at the Jack Clark Park in Horsley Hill Road, South Shields, will feature six teams who will be playing the short form of the game for the chance to lift the winner’s trophy.
Throughout the day a bouncy castle and games will also be available to entertain visitors, along with live music and a barbecue.
The club’s head coach, Chris Mann, said: “The tournament, in the past, was always really popular within the cricket community but, for whatever reason, it just stopped taking place some years ago.
“I’ve done other tournaments in the past, but this is the one which really sticks in the minds of players as one of the most successful.
“That’s why I’m bringing it back. It was something I was going to do last year as a lot of our young players have never experienced a six-a-side tournament.
“Hopefully the event, along with the fun day, will put cricket back at the forefront and give the wider community the chance to come along and find out more about what the sport is about.
“Marsden Cricket Club is very much a community and family-orientated club and hopefully if this is a success, it will become an annual event.”
The first game will start at 10.30am with the final taking place at 4pm.
