South Tyneside MPs say it's '˜about time' as action is taken over Metro service

Emma Lewell-Buck, who represents South Shields for Labour, has campaigned for action to improve the running of the trains, which have been hit by a series of problems in recent months.

She said: “This announcement is very good news. It is about time we saw some action to redress the terrible service people have had to endure over the past few years.

“I sincerely hope the North East Combined Authority supports this plan, as it is disappointing that there has been little action in ending this contract sooner.

“I am delighted that thanks to public pressure, the great campaign work from groups such as ‘Sort out the Metro’ and my own campaigning on this issue, that we are at last seeing some moves to improve this vital service. “

Jarrow MP Stephen Hepburn added: “I believe, as I always have, that transport services should be in public hands, and I am therefore delighted that Metro is being taken back into direct public control from next April.

“I hope very much that this becomes a long term arrangement.”

Ross Smith, director of policy for the North East Chamber of Commerce, said: “Public transport is critical for businesses, for both getting their employees into work and customers to their door.

“The Metro plays an important part in this process in the Tyne and Wear area and I hope that future plans will ensure it continues to meet our members’ needs.”
