South Tyneside schools battle it out in badminton competition

More than 80 pupils from over a dozen local schools, including Mortimer Community College, Whitburn C of E Academy and St Wilfrid’s RC College competed at the event, which took place at the Tyneside Badminton Centre in Kenton.

Key Stage 3 (KS3) competed on one day and Key Stage 4 (KS4) on the other.

The schools had qualified for the Tyne & Wear final having competed in their own local authority areas earlier in the term.

Gosforth Academy and Newcastle High School for Girls won the KS3 and KS4 girls competitions respectively, and St Thomas More and Benfield School won it for the boys in KS3 and KS4.

David Elliott, 16, from Mortimer, said: “We had a great day. The results weren’t our best but I had fun. I’ve been playing for three years, mainly because I was pretty good at it and I will carry on playing, this has definitely inspired me to get better.”

Mitchell Creasy, 15, also from Mortimer, said, “This is my first year here and I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere and getting to compete with my mates in a really good venue made it feel special. I’m hoping to come back again next year.”

School Games Co-ordinator Claire Lee, from Tyne & Wear Sport, said: “The badminton event was a huge success and a great day was had by all. Well done to all those who qualified as the enthusiasm of the competitors is what makes these events so special.”
