The National Charity Partnership aims to inspire millions to eat better, get active and reduce their risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease.

Events are taking part at Haven Point and Temple Park in South Shields as well as Monkton Stadium and Jarrow Pool, in Jarrow.

All classes, predominantly aimed at women aged 20 to 45, are free of charge and suitable for all abilities and those who are new to exercising.

Councillor Alan Kerr, deputy leader of the council with responsibility for culture and leisure, said: “Our programme of free weekly exercise classes, which are suited for all abilities, aim to help women increase their fitness and improve their overall health and wellbeing.

Katherine Hale, prevention programme manager for the National Charity Partnership, said: “Being active is an effective way to look after your wellbeing and can help reduce your risk of conditions such as Type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease.

“These conditions are serious and affect millions of people, but are largely preventable.”
