South Tyneside youngsters get to grips with art

The Customs House has launched a the group called ‘Mega Make’ for young people aged 11 to 13.

It is expanding on their already popular ‘Mini Maker’ sessions and aims to get young people involved in creative challenges.

Elizabeth Kane learning officer said: “We’re excited to see how children meet the challenges set in our Mega Makers sessions.

“Mega Makers will always involve a creative challenge but will also help young people find out about creative jobs. 
“It will compliment what we already do for Mini Makers, our sessions for kids with their grown ups.”

The next Mega Maker session takes place during The Customs House third annual Takeover Festival.

The Takeover is The Customs House arts festival for children and young people up to the age of 25.

The festival gives young people the chance to organise and help lead activities and events. During this Takeover edition Mega Makers youngsters will create festival spectacles, weave dream catchers and make glow in the dark paintings.

Beth O’Doherty, was part of The Takeover Team last year, is now helping run Mega Makers.

She said: “I have volunteered at The Customs House for the past year helping with Mini Maker Mondays. 
“It’s great to be able to help young people enjoy the arts and feel at home visiting The Customs House.”
