Axed staff say they have been left ‘heartbroken’ after a South Tyneside care home closed its doors for the final time.
Hampshire Court care home, based in Hampshire Way, South Shields, shut on Friday – with its 11-strong workforce losing their jobs.
The nursing facility had space for 52 elderly residents – but was well under capacity with just 13 residents being care for before its closure.
Hampshire Court – operated by Marsden Rock Care Limited – provided specialist care for elderly people battling dementia and other mental health conditions.
One worker said she had long feared the closure was inevitable.
She said; “It is due to financial issues. We had a capacity for 52 residents but there were only 13 on site.
“It is heartbreaking for us all.”Staff member
“We didn’t have enough residents. It is heartbreaking for us all. The residents are like our family.”
Another worker said; “It is absolutely appalling.
“We have been concentrating on trying to make the transition as easy as possible for the residents.
“It is only now that we can start to go job hunting.
A spokeswoman for South Tyneside Council said: “We were aware of Marsden Rock Care Limited’s plan to close Hampshire Court. This is an unsettling time for residents and their families and we have been providing them with every support in their move to alternative accommodation.
“The council and its partners also worked closely with Marsden Rock Care Limited to ensure that the closure process ran as smooth as possible for everyone concerned.”
No one from Marsden Rock Care Limited was available for comment.
