Steve McClaren issues away-day challenge to Newcastle new boy Jonjo Shelvey

The Newcastle United midfielder, signed for £12million from Swansea City last month, has been outstanding in his two home appearances for the club.

But Shelvey – January's "best-value" signing, according to CIES Football Observatory – hasn't been able to dictate the play in the same way away from home.

And head coach McClaren is hopeful he can impose himself on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tomorrow evening.

"He's played two very good games at home, and we have played two away games the standard could be higher – that's not just him, but other players as well – so that's something that we have to bear in mind," said McClaren.

“He's potentially a very, very good player.

"There's a lot more to come when he gets fitter, which he will do with games. We have got 18 days of training after Chelsea, so we will work on that.

“Individually, we've got potential, and we have to start showing it in terms of results."
