Steve McClaren reacts to Newcastle's failed Saido Berahino bid

Steve McClaren says Newcastle United's £28.5million January spend was a 'statement of intent' from the relegation-threatened club.

Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend, Henri Saivet and Seydou Doumbia arrived at St James’s Park during the transfer window.

“I think we have done some great business and made some very good signings,” said head coach McClaren.

“It was a statement of intent of what we want to do. We got our rewards with some very good players.”

Newcastle, however, failed in a £21million bid to sign West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino.

McClaren said: “That would’ve been a bonus had it come off, but that’s football.”
