Steve McClaren reveals the transfer window question he and Lee Charnley are asking themselves at Newcastle

McClaren's relegation-threatened side remain 18th in the Premier League table after this afternoon's 2-1 loss to Watford at Vicarage Road.

And the game underlined the need for attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Aleksandar Mitrovic laboured up front on his own, and it was a defender – full league debutant Jamaal Lascelles – that scored Newcastle's goal in what was the club's fourth successive defeat away from home.

The club is interested in West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino and Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend.

But there has been no progress in talks over deals for the pair, and Newcastle are understood to be looking at other options, including Swansea City's Bafetimbi Gomis.

And McClaren and managing director Lee Charnley will "talk" over the coming days.

"I mean, at present, we've got Manu Riviere coming back, and other players who can score," said head coach McClaren, who has refused to publicly acknowledge that the club needs to sign a striker this month."We've struggled to score away from home, but, certainly, the window's open. There's 10 days to go."We go about our business quietly, we've done that. We've brought two in."Again we'll be talking and talking, as every club will be in this window, to say 'what can we do to improve it?'"
