And there were top-level talks today over McClaren’s future at the club.

However, the discussions, led by managing director Lee Charnley, did not lead to a decisive outcome.

While the 54-year-old remains in charge, United could yet make a managerial change before Monday night’s game at Leicester City.

David Moyes, Nigel Pearson, Rafa Benitez and Harry Redknapp have all been linked with the club.
