These images tweeted by Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service show Darlington firefighters and the water rescue team from Bishop Auckland pull the animal to safety earlier today.

The goat was rescued near Croft Road in Darlington with the help of the water rescue crew, who are also trained in animal rescue techniques.

The adult goat was assisted back to the bank side with the use of lines.

Once it was back on solid ground, it was handed over to the RSPCA, as no owner had come forward.
