Wood you believe it? A South Tyneside pub’s traditional ways have just secured it a national award.

Staff at the Steamboat, in Mill Dam, South Shields, were recently presented with the Spring Pub Of The Season award from The Society For The Preservation of Beers From The Wood (SPBW).

We’re thrilled to bits the Society has gave us this award.

The award-winning venue received the nod for its seven wooden cask ales which it offers its customers.

Kath Brain, bar manager, said: “We’re thrilled to bits that the Society has gave us this award, after all only four pubs a year will be lucky enough to receive it, so it’s a great achievement.

“At the moment we have seven wooden cask beers on offer. They’re not a permanent fixture as we change them regularly.

“They’re very popular with drinkers as the wooden casks can give the beer inside different flavours.

“When the casks are empty their get steam cleaned and then reused.

The SPBW was launched in 1963 when six beer drinkers decided there was a growing decline in both quality and palatability of beer.

The voluntary organisation’s main aim is are to stimulate the brewing and encourage the drinking of traditional draught beer, drawn direct from the cask by gravity, hand pump, or by other methods approved by the committee.

Although the society does not specifically campaign for the use of wooden casks, it supports and encourages breweries and pubs that use them.

It’s not the first time this year the pub, which was built in the early 1800s, has had its hard work recognised. In
February it was named as Sunderland and South Tyneside’s Camra Pub of the Year.

The win comes after members of the Campaign For Real Ale organisation throughout the area voted for the pub.

The Steamboat is already one of the top 16 pubs in the county, after scooping the regional title last summer.

Kath added: “It’s always nice to receive an award and recognition for the service you provide.”
