THE stage stars of tomorrow are being offered the chance to tread the boards this summer in South Tyneside.

Starset Theatre – South Tyneside’s longest-running performing arts group for children and young people – is staging two separate weeks of intensive performing-arts coaching.

The training will be under the direction of John Hudson and his team.

John, well known as a professional musician and singing teacher, runs Starset with his wife, Elissa.

The venue for the Summer Schools is Boldon Theatre, New Road, Boldon, with the first week beginning on Monday.

An entirely separate programme of events takes place the following week, beginning Monday, August 4, and each course culminates in a performance on Friday afternoon for families and friends of the students.

Maria said: “This gives the youngsters a chance to show off their various singing, acting and dancing skills they have learnt throughout the week.

“The material covered in the classes will include the smash-hit musical Hairspray – which is also Starset Theatre’s next big production to be staged at the Customs House, South Shields – and popular favourites Bugsy Malone and Fame, as well as more current material from the charts and recent Disney phenomenon Frozen.”

All students aged from five to 18 are welcome.

John said: “No previous experience is necessary. There are places available for all ages and skill levels. There are no auditions, as that can be very off-putting to someone new to performing arts.

“We want new students to be able to come along, make new friends, develop their confidence and simply have a go.

“Many students have no experience, but just need an opportunity.”

Elissa added “Many of our past students have gone on to theatre success or further training.

“Unless someone comes and gives it a try, you’ll never know just how much talent they might have!”

The team’s successes includes major Customs House productions such as Peter Pan, Miss Saigon and Les Miserables.
