A GUEST house has set a “first” in this year’s What’s On Where competition.
The Balmoral, in Roker Terrace, Sunderland, has become the first contender to get a nomination from overseas.
The glowing tribute came from a Swedish guest, who said: “Our family of two sons and three grandchildren, and my husband and I, had a wonderful five days staying at this beautiful guest house.
“The staff were very helpful and the breakfast was a big favourite with all the family.
“Their kindness and hospitality made us decide to return there again.”
A second nomination for the Balmoral said: “They are so friendly and try their best to make it homely. Nothing is too much for them.”
Paul Cooper, who runs the Balmoral with his wife Elaine, said: “We are over the moon to be nominated.”
Paul first started work at the guest house as a cook. He also helped out around the premises and was then asked to take over the running.
He said: “I love it. I love meeting different people and people who have become regulars here.”
Entries have been arriving in impressive numbers for our competition, which aims to reward the elite in everything from restaurants to children’s venues, takeaways to parks and community areas, and hotels to the best shopping experience. However, we want more of your nominations. We are looking for the very best in the arts, culture, hospitality and leisure sectors of Wearside and South Tyneside, and readers can nominate their own favourites.
The awards are held in association with our weekly entertainments guide, Wow 24/7. It’s only the second time we have held the awards and we want to build on the success of last year’s great inaugural competition.
We will be revealing the winners on February 26 in a glittering finale at the Best Western Roker Hotel.
The deadline for entries is February 5. Then, the judges will draw up a shortlist from all the contenders.
