Dutch defender Glenn Loovens is set to sign for the Black Cats on a free transfer after leaving Sheffield Wednesday.

The 34-year-old will offer vast experience to Ross' side after spells at clubs such as Celtic, Feyenoord and Zaragoza.

He made 23 appearances for Wednesday in the Championship last season and was a cult hero among supporters thanks to a number of passionate and committed displays.

Loovens is set to undergo a medical at the club in the coming days as he closes in on a move.

Meanwhile, reports in the Scottish Sun have claimed that Sunderland are interested in a loan deal for Rangers' Greg Docherty.

Docherty, 21, was reportedly told by Steven Gerrard that his first team chances at Ibrox would be limited - and speculation is now mounting that he could be set for a temporary switch south of the border.

Jack Ross has been dealt a blow in his pursuit of Mo Eisa, though, as Leeds United are said to be ready to enter the race for the Cheltenham star.

Eisa, who netted 25 times last season, has already attracted interest from Peterborough, Portsmouth and the Black Cats - although none of the clubs have met his reported £1.5m price tag.

The News, Portsmouth now suggest that Leeds could be the next club to launch a bid for the Sudanese striker as they look to bolster their attacking options.

However, reports from Gloucestershire Live suggest that the Whites are not interested - although other Championship clubs are eyeing a move.
