Support for elderly victim of air weapon attack as police investigation continues

The pair have been quizzed in connection with the alleged assault that left the woman with a facial injury.

Northumbria Police said the assault happened in Erskine Road, South Shields, on Sunday morning.

She was taken to South Tyneside District Hospital after the incident, which happened at 8.40am.

The woman has since been released and is now recovering at home.

Officers have confirmed they have arrested two men as part of the inquiry.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent, while a 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Both have been bailed until a date in June as investigations continue.

Meanwhile, messages of support for the victim came flooding in from Gazette readers.

Writing on Facebook, Kelly Crowther wrote: “My best wishes to the lady who was injured.”

Norman Cassin added: “An old lady, somebody’s other, grandma. Makes me sick!!!!”

Ann Cooper wrote: “Hope the elderly woman is on the mend!”

John Seymour posted: “That’s probably the lowest thing to do ever!”

Keith Whalen said: “Very sad, I hope the lady makes a quick recovery. Air guns + BB guns are not toys despite what some people may think.”

Chief Inspector Neil Robson said: “The woman has suffered a facial injury as a result in this incident.

“Inquiries are ongoing to establish where the weapon was fired from and trace the person responsible and we want anyone who may have information to come forward.”

Residents on Erskine Road spoke of their shock after the early morning shooting.

One man said “For this to happen to an elderly woman is sick.”
