LABOUR held off the challenge of UKIP in tonight’s by-election for the Primrose ward on South Tyneside Council.

Moira Smith was elected into the Town Hall with 755 votes, seeing off UKIP’s John Clarke who polled 520 votes.

Martin Vaughan (BNP) was third with 146 votes while the Conservative’s John Coe trailed in fourth with 80 votes.

The by-election was held to fill a ward seat vacated by Emma Lewell-Buck after she replaced David Miliband as MP for South Shields.
