South Tyneside Borough Council officers are recommending that the bid for 23 apartments as part of a three-storey complex at the former Water's Edge pub, in Trow Lea, South Shields, be rejected next week.

A report to Tuesday's planning committee meeting cites the visual impact on the foreshore area and the historic Grade II-listed Trow Rock gun platform. While councillors can still reject the advice, the recommendation has still disappointed a number of Gazette readers.

Malcolm Nichol wrote on our Facebook page: "The place is a mess so people complain over nothing to keep the mess? The world is going mad."

Valerie Davidson added: "Well I don’t see any problem. More rates for the council cannot be bad."

Andy Gibbins commented: "I can't see what the problem is in building there? Privately owned and the place is a mess. Get them built and tidy the place up, I say."

Michelle Wall feared: "We will just watch a rat-infested derelict building become more of an eyesore!! Good on you."

Armando Saroukos said: "Cue the refusals from people that would snatch them in a second if they could live there so I say go ahead."

Water's Edge pub owner Kevin Brogan's plans have also attracted criticism with more than 300 letters of objection sent to the council.

Discussing the recommendation on Facebook, Peter St Clair wrote: "That's good news. If planning permission was granted it would be the thin end of the wedge.

"More would invariably follow, causing a blot on the landscape of our town's beautiful sea front."

Liz Anderson added: "Knock it down and put it back to the way it was. A nice open space for everyone to enjoy, views of the sea, no more buildings."

Maria Lipscombe said: "Yes it’s right decision as once some houses are built they would just build all along and spoil the coastline."

Paula Dawes agreed, writing: "Would be great to see it refused. Something needs to be there, do something for the kids.

Nichola Farrell continued: "Don't destroy the beautiful seaside that we are so lucky to have. It is the best thing about South Shields."
