A group of pensioners affectionately known as the “nannas of Bede’s World” helped cancer sufferers by holding a coffee morning.

The group – called Active Ladies In South Tyneside (the A List) – meets every Wednesday at Bede’s World, on Church Bank, Jarrow.

They recently held a coffee morning for Macmillan Cancer Support, and raised £450 for the charity.

The women all volunteer at Bede’s World, and also go on social visits and do other work for the community.

Chairwoman Joan Howley said: “We were absolutely over the moon to raise £450.

“It was definitely more than we had hoped for, and we also made things like birthday cards.

“We had a bit of a sale to help with the funds.

“We’ve been going for six or seven years now, and the group is very strong, having started off with nine people. Now there are 30 of us.

“We’re affectionately known as the nannas of Bede’s World

“We help out whenever there is an event there.

“It’s really great to be a part of this group, and a lot of friendships have formed from it.”
