Dr Jim Gordon is one of eight clinicians in the UK - and the only one from the North East - to be in the running to be named Clinical Leader of the Year at the 2018 Health Service Journal Awards.

The national awards recognise and celebrate exceptional NHS clinical leaders who are making a difference to their patients’ lives.

Dr Gordon works at the Imeary Street Surgery, South Shields, and was nominated by his colleagues at NHS South Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) for driving dramatic improvements in mental health and learning disability services and care.

He was the driving force behind the creation of the innovative Lifecycle Service, and spearheaded the development of the joint commissioning unit - involving South Tyneside Council and the CCG - which set out to remove the artificial barriers between health and social care.

He is also the chairman of the Mental Health Strategic Alliance, the Learning Disability Transformation Board and the Children and Adolescents Mental Health Services Transformation Board, and clinical director for mental health and learning disabilities at the CCG.

He said: “I feel very proud to be nominated for the award, predominantly as recognition of the fantastic work done by all of my partners in our alliance.

“I hope that this nomination helps us all recognise that we are on the right track and that we can continue to work towards realising our ambitions.

“For me personally it’s fantastic, and also very reassuring at this time in the NHS to be recognised as getting it right.”

NHS South Tyneside CCG chief executive David Hambleton said: “Jim is one of the most passionate and engaging advocates for people with learning disabilities and mental health issues that I have ever had the pleasure of working with, and fully deserves to be nominated.”
