The walk organised by the Alzheimer’s Society is expected to attract 5,000 walkers on Saturday.

The event is the charity’s flagship fundraising event and will be officially started by BAFTA award-winning actor John Middleton who played vicar Ashley Thomas from Emmerdale. In the soap, his character was diagnosed with dementia.

A spokesman for the charity said: “The Memory Walk is Alzheimer’s Society’s flagship fundraising event of the year, when thousands walk in memory of – or to pay tribute to – loved ones affected by dementia.”

Those taking part in the walk will have the choice of a 2km route along Sea Road and the promenade or a longer route which will take people along the South Shields coastline.
