Three South Tyneside buildings shortlisted in property '˜Oscars'

Three buildings in South Tyneside been shortlisted for awards in the region's '˜property Oscars'.

The new developments have made it into the finals for the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) North East Awards.

The Clervaux Exchange conference and business centre, in Jarrow, is in the running for the building conservation accolade after its transformation from Jarrow police station.

It now provides serviced offices as well as high-tech conference facilities, providing a unique historical venue for local companies.

Marsden Road Health & Wellbeing Centre, in Horsley Hill, South Shields, has been shortlisted for the community benefit award.

The state-of-the-art building houses multiple community facilities including GP/nursing services, a dental surgery, and sporting activities such as UFC Football Summer Camp and Horsley Hill Amateur Boxing Club.

Hebburn Central – a new library and community sports centre with a high-spec dance studio and six-lane pool – is also up for the community benefit accolade, as well as the design through innovation award.

The project represents the first phase of an ambitious regeneration project in the area.

Jarrow’s Fellgate surface water management scheme is in the running for the Infrastructure accolade.

The defence works will protect the Fellgate estate from future floods such as those the community suffered in 2012, affecting 175 properties.

Coun John Anglin, lead member of regeneration and economy at South Tyneside Council, said: “It is wonderful to have three buildings in South Tyneside shortlisted for awards.

“These state-of-the-art structures reflect the high quality and design of buildings we strive for throughout the borough.

“The RICS North East Awards celebrate excellence in the built environment and we are delighted that three buildings have been honoured in this way.

“Hebburn Central, in particular, demonstrates just how our buildings combine innovative and ambitious design with the needs of local residents to create outstanding functional and modern building.”

All category winners will go on to the national RICS Awards Grand Final in October 2016.

The chairman of the judging panel, Adam Serfontein, who is managing director of Hanro Group, said: “Despite the North East being one of the smaller UK regions, the RICS North East Awards attract a significant volume of entries every year.

“This year is no different, and our shortlist of inspiring schemes is testament to the talent and exceptional skills of our region’s property professionals.

“I am looking forward to the judging process as many of the shortlisted projects are not only pioneering in their design, but they are also having a hugely positive impact on their local areas.”
