HEBBURN fundraiser Tony ‘The Fridge’ has been shortlisted for a national award for his charity efforts.

Avid marathon runner Tony Phoenix-Morrison was nominated as Endurance Fundraiser of the Year in the JustGiving Awards 2014.

The feat which earned him the nomination was completing the London Marathon twice in 24 hours in April - with a 42kg fridge strapped to his back.

The incredible challenge raised more than £10,000 for Cancer Research UK, earning him a place on the final shortlist.

He said: “It is such an honour to have been nominated for this JustGiving Award, and the support I have had over the years has been incredible.

“As I know a lot of families who have been plagued by cancer, I decided I needed to do something to fight back.

“The fridge symbolises the burden we all feel when a loved one is struck down by this awful disease.

“I hope that my nomination will bring more awareness to Cancer Research UK and inspire others to get involved, by donating or fundraising themselves to help beat cancer.”

Anne-Marie Huby, managing director at JustGiving said: “The sheer determination shown by shortlisted fundraisers like Tony to raise donations for causes close to their hearts is truly inspirational.

“It takes more than just passion to make a difference, and you couldn’t ask for more discipline or willpower than he has shown.”

Now in their fifth year, the JustGiving Awards recognise the outstanding individuals, teams and charities who together helped raise nearly £300m through JustGiving pages for good causes over the last year.

The awards have nine categories, recognising fundraising in myriad ways, from the weird and wonderful to truly inspirational.

This year, JustGiving is putting the finalists’ destiny in the public’s hands.

From the nominees, JustGiving has selected a shortlist of finalists, and it is now over to the public to pick a winner for seven of the nine categories.

All shortlisted entrants will be opened up to a public vote through the JustGiving Awards Facebook app.

Giving App of the Year will be voted by JustGiving, and Fundraiser of the Year will be awarded to the person who gets the most votes overall.

There will also be a Special Recognition Award made on the night.

Tony will be attending the red carpet awards ceremony at the BFI Southbank in London on September 25, where the winners will be announced, and he will have the chance to celebrate his achievements with other fundraising heroes.
