The Daily Mail report that the club, which tried and failed to sign Berahino last summer, is set to bid £17million for the striker.

Newcastle and West Brom have been involved in talks over a deal for the 22-year-old.

But the two clubs are too far apart in their valuations, and United are assessing other options, including Chelsea's Loic Remy.

West Brom rejected a series of bids from Tottenham for Berahino in the last transfer window.

Their final offer last August was a reported £22million.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are set to sell Andros Townsend to Newcastle for £12million.

The winger is undergoing a medical today, having arrived on Tyneside last night.
