Woman airlifted to hospital after being hit by a bus outside Gateshead Interchange

A woman has been airlifted to hospital with a serious head injury after being hit by a bus in Gateshead.

Emergency services were called at 1.23pm on Saturday, January 4 to reports that a pedestrian had been hit by a bus outside Gateshead Interchange.

North East Ambulance Service and the Great North Air Ambulance attended the scene and the woman was airlifted to the RVI in Newcastle with a significant head injury.

A second person was also taken to the RVI by road with less serious injuries.

Gateshead Interchange has now reopened following the incident but services 26, 27, 56, 57 and 58 towards Newcastle are still being diverted, with passengers asked to board at the High Street station.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 1.23pm to reports a pedestrian had been hit by a bus.

“We sent a specialist paramedic, an ambulance, a trauma paramedic and an officer and we requested the support of the Great North Air Ambulance.“We have taken one female patient to the RVI by air with a significant head injury and a second patient who is walking wounded by road.”
