A stretch of the North East’s busiest road will be subject to a series of overnight road closures from tomorrow as part of a £61m improvement scheme.
The A1 between Coal House and Lobley Hill near Gateshead will be closed in both directions overnight from 8pm on Saturday until 6am on Sunday to change the layout of the temporary lanes.
The closure will be repeated almost every night until Thursday, October 15. Clearly-signed diversions will be in place along Kingsway.
The exception will be Friday, October 9, to avoid disruption to the evening Rugby World Cup game being staged at St James’s Park in Newcastle.
Highways England contractors are creating an extra lane along the A1 in both directions between the Coal House junction and the MetroCentre junction.
