The work, which will allow for the renewal of up to 18,000 metres of vital overhead power line, will see 11 stations close.

A replacement bus service is in operation as no trains will run from Heworth to Regent Centre and Four Lane Ends for two weeks.

The 900 bus will call at or near all of the closed stations while two Express replacement bus services (X900 and X901) will call at just some stations. For the full timetable click here.

Tickets and passes will be valid on the bus and the driver will also sell tickets although customers are asked to try to have the correct change. Passengers with smartcards are also reminded to touch in and out at the start and end of their journey.

Journeys will take longer so customers are asked to check train and bus times before travelling and leave additional time for their commute.

Nexus, which manages the network, confirmed the work will see the section of the Metro close for 14 days.

The company is also preparing it for the arrival of a £362 million train fleet entering service from 2023 and is being carried out while passenger numbers are lower during the lockdown.

Major Projects Director at Nexus, Cathy Massarella, said previously: “There is no good time to shut such a big chunk of the network, and this work can only be undertaken effectively during an extended closure period.

"The current lockdown means that we are able to do the work while passenger numbers are low.

“The power lines in our central area are ageing.

"They face the most wear and tear on a daily basis, and they need to be replaced as soon as practically possible, which is why this work is booked in for next week.

“We will ensure there is a fast and reliable replacement bus service running when the Metro line is shut.

"We advise passengers to plan their journeys in advance before travelling of they need to make an essential journey.”
