This is when the Metro, Shields Ferry, buses and trains will run across Tyne and Wear this Christmas and New Year

As the Christmas and New Year approaches, details of when public transport will run have been shared by travel bosses.

Nexus has said while services will be running during the 2021 festive period, there will be no transport available on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

This is when the following networks will be running:

Metro

On Christmas Eve, there's a normal weekday service until about 6pm, and then an hourly service until 11pm.

On Boxing Day, there's a normal Sunday service from 8am to 8pm. No trains will run between Pelaw and South Hylton but replacement buses will be running.

From Monday, December 27 until Thursday 30 December Metro services will run to the usual timetables.

On New Year’s Eve, a normal weekday service will run until 10pm, then every 30 minutes until 11pm.

On Sunday 2 January, a normal Sunday service will run.

On Monday 3 January, there's a normal weekday service.

Buses

On Christmas Eve, Go North East and Stagecoach will run a Saturday service; Arriva will mostly operate a Saturday service with some exceptions – click here for more detail.

Buses will run until about 6pm, then a reduced service until 7.30pm, when most services will finish.

On Boxing Day the main bus operators will run some daytime services, with additional services paid for by Nexus – click here for more detail.

On Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28 Stagecoach will run Saturday service while Arriva and Go North East will operate a Sunday service.

On Wednesday, December 29 and Thursday, December 30 services run by the main bus operators will run to normal Saturday timetables.

On New Year’s Eve the main bus operators will run a Saturday service, with some exceptions from Arriva, until about 6pm, then reduced services until 7.30pm, when most bus services will finish.

Shields Ferry

On Christmas Eve there will be a normal Friday service with the last ferry from South Shields at 6.15pm, and from North Shields at 6.30pm.

On Boxing Day ferry services will operate to a Sunday timetable.

The ferry will run to a normal timetable from Monday 27 to Thursday, December 30.

The Shields Ferry does not currently run after 6.30pm - for full details click here.

The ferry will run to a normal timetable on Sunday 2 and Monday, January 3.

Rail – Northern train services between Newcastle and Sunderland

There are no Northern Rail services on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day.

Northern will operate normal services on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve with a reduced timetable from 7pm.

It will run a normal service from Monday, December 27.

Nexus Customer Services can be called on (0191) 20 20 747 and will open for its normal hours on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve and is closed on Christmas Day, Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28.

It will open as normal on other weekdays.
