Tyne Tunnel travel chaos as lorry breaks down

A BROKEN-down lorry in the Tyne Tunnel caused rush-hour chaos for drivers this morning.

The car transporter broke down in the northbound tunnel shortly after 7am, and made it impossible for other heavy vehicles to pass.

Cars were allowed through, but the disruption spread thoughout the area, causing long tailbacks at the tunnel, Testo’s roundabout in South Tyneside and the A19.

The car transporter was eventually removed just before 9am and both lanes of traffic reopened.

Tunnel operator TT2 apologised for the delays.
