Tributes paid to popular South Shields punk Colin '˜Hodge' Hodgson who worked with the Angelic Upstarts and The Fauves

Colin ‘Hodge’ Hodgson was well known on the borough’s music circuit after being an original member of both the Angelic Upstarts and The Fauves.

The 60-year-old from Brentwood Place, Laygate. South Shields, spent his adult life playing with bands both at home and in London.

Colin, who has been described as an ‘encyclopedia of music’ by his friends, died on September 1 following a heart attack.

His funeral was held at south Shields Crematorium on Friday.

Brian Smith, who has been Colin’s friends since childhood, said: “Colin was a massive influence on the punk scene in South Shields in the late 70s,

“He influenced bands like the Angelic Upstarts and the Fauves who are still going strong.

“Colin was a original member of both bands and was well known in Shields for being one of the first punks in the town.

“Colin was a encyclopaedia of music, he was a kind generous person and great fun - a well known character around the town.”

After attending Barnes Road Infants and Junior School and later Brinkburn Comprehensive, Colin served an apprenticeship as a sheet metal worker.

Throughout his teenage years he took a interest in music and in the early 80s he headed to London where he played in various bands.

However, he later returned back to the borough due to his parents’ ill heath.

In 2016 The Favues reformed and released a CD, Colin recorded six of the tracks but sadly due to his poor health he had to quit.
