Two people had to be rescued from a car caught in flood water as South Tyneside bore the brunt of last night’s storm.

A crew from Hebburn fire station pulled up next to the Rover 75 car in Jarrow Road, Jarrow, shortly before 11pm and were able to help the driver and passenger from the Rover 75 car onto the fire engine.

There was also severe flooding in Commercial Road at Tyne Dock, where fire crews found a taxi which had been submerged by the water around 11.20pm.

The driver had been able to escape from the vehicle before firefighters arrived.

Lightning is suspected to have caused an electrical fire in a shower unit in the bathroom of a three-story house in Glaisedale Court shortly before 11pm.

And lightning also destroyed a telegraph pole in Sunderland Road, East Boldon.
