A South Shields opticians has been encouraging people to hand in their unwanted glasses to help people in Africa.

Specsavers in King Street has collected more than 2,000 pairs of glasses from the community.

The team from Specsavers encouraged people to donate to the scheme in aid of international sight charity Vision Aid Overseas.

Bryan Clark, store director of the South Shields branch, said: “We’ve been blown away by the response from residents.

“It’s wonderful that the sale of the reusable materials from these glasses will help create a positive effect on the lives of people less fortunate.”
