Jarrow Cross Primary has become the first in the borough to be assessed under the new short inspections programme brought in last September.

This change meant officers spent one day in the school in order to carry out the monitoring process.

The new short inspections are only carried out on schools previously rated as “good”. However, if it is seen to have declined or a judgement cannot be made, a visit can be turned into a full inspection.

Officers visited Jarrow Cross Primary, in Borough Road, Jarrow, for one day last month. In a report by the watchdogs it praised the “unwavering determination” of headteacher Susan McBeth and her leadership team in “providing the very best education for every pupil”.

The report added there was a “higher than average” proportion of pupils reaching the nationally expected level at the end of Year 6 in reading, writing and maths.

Mrs McBeth said: “We are delighted Jarrow Cross has been graded as continuing to be a good school.

“The inspection recognised the unwavering determination to provide the very best education for every pupil which is an ambition shared by all staff.

“Our leaders were also credited for their commitment to improving the life chances of our pupils.

“Our status as good is a testament to our hard-working staff and the support we have received from parents and governors.”

During the visit inspectors observed teaching and learning, spoke to pupils about their school experiences and looked at samples of work done by students.
