Police investigating the assault and rape of a woman in the early hours of Friday have made an arrest.
They appealed for help to trace a man after a woman reported that she had been attacked inside an address in Willington Quay, Wallsend.
The 27-year-old had been out with friends in Whitley Bay and left the South Parade area some time after 2am with a man she had not met before.
It is believed they left the area together and possibly took a taxi to the Willington Quay area.
From there they went into an address, where the woman was subsequently assaulted by the man and raped.
She left the premises some time later and reported the incident.
Police have been carrying out inquiries in the area and appealed for witnesses.
It was revealed this afternoon that a 39-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape today.
He remains in custody and is helping police with their investigation.
