The surf was definitely up – even if the Mayor went down – when he visited one of the borough’s top tourist attractions.
Tomorrow sees the opening of Ocean Beach Pleasure Park on South Shields seafront.
As the park prepares for what is set to be yet another fun-packed season, South Tyneside Mayor, Coun Ernest Gibson, called in to wish bosses well.
He also gamely tried out a few of the rides – including practicing his surfing skills on The Wave.
Coun Gibson said: “The Wave is one of my favourite rides at the pleasure park. Believe it or not, I’ve done it before. It not only tests out your balance and co-ordination it’s also great fun, although I think I need more practice.”
He added: “Ocean Beach Pleasure Park is an absolutely fantastic place for all the family – there is something here for everyone to enjoy.
“Here, in South Tyneside we are so lucky, we have a fantastic beach, fantastic parks and we also have this brilliant pleasure park.
“As well as the rides, there are the indoor Quasar and the amusement arcades. There is just so much for people here to enjoy.” The amusement park has more than 40 rides and attractions catering for all ages, including the Pony Express, Flying Jets and Miami Surf.
At the moment, Ocean Beach is offering people the chance to enjoy £25 worth of rides for £15 when tickets are bought on line.
Visitors can also exchange Tesco reward vouchers for ride tickets.
Ocean Beach operator, Michael Sheeran said: “We are hoping it’s going to be a great season and are looking forward to welcoming customers old and new. We pride ourselves on being a day out the whole family can enjoy, and South Shields as a whole has so much to offer visitors from the region.”
