New virtual fitness classes have kicked off in South Shields to help people get into shape.
Top fitness instructors will be leading the virtual classes, which launched at Haven Point leisure complex in the town today.
Les Mills Virtual Classes will see fitness enthusiasts working out as they normally would, but with the instructor projected on a big screen in a studio, which has been renovated to feature LED lighting and a pumping sound system.
Coun Alan Kerr, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council, with responsibility for Culture and Leisure, said: “We are really excited to be launching our new virtual fitness classes at Haven Point.
“We appreciate people are leading increasingly busy lives and, for many, finding time to exercise can often be difficult.
"These new classes not only give our residents more freedom, flexibility and choice over what exercises they want to do at a time that suits, but are designed to deliver incredible results.
"They also provide better access to group exercise while offering a great opportunity for people to try something new.
“We remain fully committed to improving our leisure services offer and supporting people to enhance their health and fitness.
"This continued investment in the Haven Point exercise programme and introduction of the new technology help us to reduce downtime and increase use of the studios, which in turn, provides better value for money.
“While our regular ‘live’ group fitness classes will remain a vital part of the exercise programme, we believe the virtual classes will be a welcome addition and prove just as popular.
"We have already trialled the technology and the response has been extremely positive.”
Nearly 30 of the sessions have been added to the timetable, taking the total number of weekly classes available at Haven Point to 85.
Virtual classes will take place at various times throughout the day, seven days a week, and include four entirely new disciplines:
· CX Worx – a 30 minute core training class for tightening and toning the abs, glutes, back and obliques;
· Sh’Bam – a fun and sociable way to exercise with 45 minutes of simple dance moves to chart topping hits;
· RPM – a calorie killer that combines cycling, choreography and motivational coaching techniques into one low-impact, aerobic and adrenaline-filled class suitable for all fitness levels;
· Body Balance – the Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates workout that builds flexibility and strength.
Virtual classes are included in all multi memberships and those who have selected classes as part of their duo membership. They must be booked in advance.
