Volunteer call for South Tyneside winter showcase

Call for volunteers to help create a Winter Wonderland spectacular at South Tyneside College

Garner and Sandy Harris of The Creative Seed are working with students to make their Dare to Dream project a reality.

They are also giving people aged 13 years and over the chance to unleash their creative skills by also getting involved.

An open day will be held at the college in St George’s Avenue on Sunday from 11am to 2pm for those interested in dance, performance, circus, carnival, costume making, craft, design, and set building to find out more about the Creative Seed and to try their hand at some of the opportunities on offer.

The couple are also on the lookout for those who have social media, music production and lighting skills.

Mr Harris, from South Shields, and a former West End choreographer said: “Next year marks the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King visiting the North East which is why we have chosen the Dare to Dream theme.

“It is based on people’s aspirations, their ability to dream and to follow their dreams.

“We are working with the students at the college on the project, but there is still a lot of opportunities for those interested in the performance aspect of the show or costume making, to get involved .

“It’s a great way to gain experience in this field working alongside industry professionals, as well as learn new skills to enhance their CV.”

The Creative Seed is a community interest company working with communities to provide creative workshops, carnival processions and short films, helping people to explore their own creative abilities and talents.

Mr Harris added: “The open day is for everyone to come along and find out more about what the project is about and to see if it is something they’d like to get involved in.

“We are looking for people who have a real interest in performance and costume making.”

Volunteers must be aged 13 and over and can give as much or as little time as they would like to the project.

Work on the project - which will be outdoors - will culminate in a free winter wonderland show featuring light and sound displays, stilt walkers and dancers, at the college on Thursday January 5 at 5.30pm.
