Walkers carried a small wooden heart inscribed with the names of those they were remembering and they were all placed in a wooden picture frame to be displayed in St Clare’s Hospice Chapel. More than £4,500 has been pledged in sponsorship so far, with more to come.

Friends Yvonne Hassan and Chris McNulty, both from Jarrow, were walking together in memory of their friend Mandy, who received care at St Clare’s Hospice earlier this year.

After completing the walk, Yvonne, who had been friends since childhood with Mandy, said: “It’s been such a sunny day which I feel was Mandy’s way of letting us know she’s been looking down and watching us.

“The walk was lovely as Chris and I spent time chatting and reflecting, and I will definitely be taking part again next year as St Clare’s is such an amazing place.”

Vanessa Middleton, fundraising manager at St Clare’s said: “The event was a huge success and we hope to make it even more special next year.

“As a registered charity, we need to raise just under £2 million each year to provide our services to those who need it, and we can only do this with the support of our local community, so a huge thank you again to everyone who supported us.”
