Ward makes sure of Newcastle United progress

Newcastle United progressed to the semi-finals of the Northumberland Senior Cup tonight, beating Northern League club Morpeth Town 3-2.

Tom Heardman netted for Newcastle Under-23s tonight

Newcastle’s Under-23s took the lead in the 14th minute when Callum Roberts’ cross somehow found the net.

And it was 2-0 when a cross from Liam Gibson found Tom Heardman and he smashed it into the roof of the net.

In the 46th minute, Morpeth pulled one back and a Mark Davison cross found Matthew Grieve, who glanced a neat header past goalkeeper Freddie Woodman into the net.

Five minutes later, the Craik Park outfit equalised when Liam Henderson crossed for Davison to head powerfully into the bottom corner.

Newcastle’s winner came on 76 minutes when Dan Ward shrugged off his man and slotted into the bottom corner of the net.
