Commuters are urged to take extra care as the Met Office warns of heavy rain during the morning rush-hour.

Driving conditions are set to be hazardous with drivers urged to take extra care on roads which will have areas of standing water.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning with heavy rain continuing throughout the morning, clearing to showers by mid-afternoon.

Rainfall of 10mm to 20mm is expected, peaking at 30mm on high ground and mostly falling within a six-hour period.

As the ground is already saturated, there is a risk of localised flooding and disruption to transport.

Motorists are reminded to keep their distance to other vehicles as damp or wet road surfaces increase the minimum stopping distance.

The Tyne and Wear Metro is also experiencing delays system-wide this morning due to a points failure in the Jesmond area.
