WATCH: 41 firefighters tackle huge blaze in South Shields wood pallet yard

Firefighters have been dealing with a big blaze in the Tyne Dock area of South Shields tonight.

The blaze was at the Pallets and Packaging Services storage yard in Mitre Place, off Commercial Road.

Flames and thick smoke were visible from several streets away, after the blaze broke out shortly after 7pm.

Police set up a 200m cordon to keep onlookers back, as the yard was well ablaze by the time the fire brigade arrived.

The blaze on the Templetown industrial estate could be seen from across the river in North Shields.

Eight fire engines from around the Tyne and Wear area attended, along with an aerial ladder platform, an operational support unit and an incident command unit

Some reports on social media suggested gas cylinders may have exploded, but these were unconfirmed.

The blaze is next door to several other businesses, and is believed to have spread to an adjoining unit.

Inspector Steve Appleton of South Tyneside area command said police were called by the fire brigade at around 7.30pm after reports of a stack of pallets on fire.

They set up the cordon, which was removed shortly before 9pm after firefighters brought the blaze under control.

No one was hurt and no premises had to be evacuated. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
