WATCH: Live crabs kicked off Metro after crustacean escape

This bizarre and upsetting footage shows live crabs being kicked off a Metro train and round a station platform.

The footage, which was taken at Gateshead Metro Station at about 9pm last night, appears to show Metro staff kicking the crustaceans off the train.

A Metro spokesman has said the crabs have now been taken to Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth.

But Mr Desborough, 24, who works at the MetroCentre in Gateshead, isn’t sure there will be many survivors.

He said: “There was probably about 40 to 50 crabs crawling about, it was surreal.

“I was waiting for the Metro on the other side of the platform and I had noticed that train had been waiting for a while so I went over to see what was going on.

“That’s when I saw all of the crabs being kicked off the train and afterwards they were kicked onto the tracks.

“ I can’t imagine many crabs would have survived, the next train would have squashed most of them.”

A Metro spokesman said: “This wasn’t an everyday occurrence and our staff acted quickly to remove the crabs from the train and platform. They have been taken to the Blue Reef Aquarium in Tynemouth.”

The Gazette was told a passenger had them in a carrier bag, which had split open, seeing the live contents escape.
