And what better way to spend it than with a ride on one of South Shields' best-loved attractions, the miniature train in South Marine Park?

The only public, steam working 9.5in gauge railway in the UK, Lakeshore Railroad opened in 1972 and is going strong to this day.

Running for just under a third of a mile round the boating lake, the tracks meander through the trees and over the level crossings before arriving back at the station.
