As the supporters were brought to St James's Park for the most important clash in a generation they taunted home fans with chants of 'six in a row' - the number of successive victories the Black Cats have enjoyed in recent meetings.

The black and white hordes who were hanging around to greet them welcomed their visitors, who were under heavy police escort, with some choice epithets of their own.
